As the managed hosting provider to The Royal Household’s official website, royal.gov.uk, leading Cloud and Managed Hosting expert, DediPower, pulled out all the stops to ensure that the site was able to cope with the huge increase in global traffic when it peaked during the Royal Wedding last week.
The historic event at Westminster Abbey, which some pundits claim was watched by 3 billion people worldwide, attracted an unprecedented number of site visitors, as the public and media sought information on Prince William & Catherine Middleton, now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and details of the ceremony, the guests, the cake and the reception.
Chris Miller, CEO of DediPower, comments, “Our ‘Support with Passion’ philosophy shone through on the day as the team monitored and balanced the servers; ensuring that the site stayed live despite the huge numbers clicking through. In one minute alone, traffic and connections began doubling. The largest viewing spike, however, was when the The Royal Household issued details on the dress at 11.00am.”
As the first Royal Wedding to be streamed live on the internet, the ceremony reached a massive global audience which affected the level of throughput to the The Royal Household’s website. Given that DediPower works with many international events and celebrity based websites, such as the Brit Awards and Virgin Galactic, it is used to successfully managing this type of fluctuating throughput.
Miller adds ”Even though we do this on a daily basis, the fact that this was such a special event and so many of our family and friends were watching, made it particularly important for us. We were delighted to have been part of this historic occasion.”
