Entrepreneurship was the order of the day at the judging of the 2011 DediPower Digital awards. After receiving entries from such a wide variety of people with so many different ideas, all keeping digital at the heart of their business, it was hard to believe we would ever be able to pick the winners.
All the finalists gathered nervously at The Telegraph office in London eagerly awaiting their chance to present their idea to the panel of judges. (Craig Martin, DediPower Managed Hosting co-founder; Chris Miller, DediPower CEO; Kamal Ahmed, Sunday Telegraph Business Editor; Paul Smart, Lloyds TSB and Bob Clift, eSkills UK).
Each business really was unique and with the standard so high, it was hard to believe they didn’t already exist! After much deliberation between the judges, the two winners were decided upon; Piran Watson, a student from UWE in Bristol, won the DediPower UK Young Digital Entrepreneur, for his concept – www.allmyreceipts.co.uk. Winning the DediPower UK Digital Innovation Award, were Swedish-born Christer Holloman, Ludvig Freij and Anders Hallsten for ATTYER.com.
The judges also decided that although all the finalists were worthy of winning, tightly behind the two winning companies was Simon Swan and Sara Jones from Hiring-Hub.com, who received an honourable mention, they were delighted.
The ‘Dragons Den’ style pitch certainly didn’t seem to affect their passion for their business ideas once they were in full swing. The anecdotes from the contestants suggested they also had a great time meeting each other and were pleased to have met other likeminded people.
Overall, the competition has been a pleasure to work on, we have attracted great talent who should all be proud of their ideas and the work that went into their submission, the finalists were a joy to meet, and the presentations fantastic to watch. The evening celebrations supported all that, and solidified the relationships made on the day along with the delight given to the two overall winners.
Good luck to everyone involved in pursuing your businesses going forward, and I look forward to helping the winners make their business a real success.
